Frequently asked questions
First consultation, pricing, tattoo aftercare: answers to the most common questions.
Tattoos
How much does a tattoo cost in Bologna?
The price depends on size, detail, style and body area. Small tattoos start from €80. Larger pieces are quoted by the project and we give you a flat rate after the free consultation.
How much does getting a tattoo hurt?
Pain depends on the body area and personal threshold. Bony spots (ribs, sternum, ankles) are more intense; arms, thighs and mid-back are usually manageable. We take breaks whenever you need one.
How long does a tattoo session last?
An average session runs 2 to 5 hours. Small pieces finish in an hour; larger projects like sleeves or backpieces are split across multiple sessions weeks apart to let the skin heal.
Which tattoo styles do you offer?
Our resident artists cover blackwork, fine-line, realism, Japanese, traditional, neo-traditional, geometric, ornamental, lettering and illustrative. Each artist has their own focus — you can filter by style in the portfolio.
Can I bring my own reference?
Yes. If you have a specific idea or reference, bring it to the consultation: the artist will adapt it to style, scale and skin readability. We respect intellectual property: we don’t copy other people’s tattoos but we can draw inspiration.
What's the minimum age for a tattoo?
18 years on your own. Between 16 and 18 we need both parents (or legal guardian) physically present with written consent and ID for everyone. We don’t tattoo under 16.
Piercing
How much does a piercing cost?
The price covers the procedure, the first-fit jewellery in certified implant-grade titanium and aftercare guidance. Basic piercings like lobe, helix or nostril start at €40. Complex ones (industrial, genital, surface) are quoted after consultation.
How long does a piercing take to heal?
Full healing ranges from 6 weeks for lobes to 6–12 months for cartilage pieces (helix, tragus, daith). Septum and navel take 6–9 months. In the first 3 months piercings feel healed but are still fragile — swap jewellery only after checking with the piercer.
What's the minimum age for a piercing?
From 16 on your own for lobe, cartilage and nostril. Under 16 you need a parent or guardian present with ID and written consent. Nipple, navel and intimate piercings from 18 only.
What jewellery do you use for a first piercing?
Only ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium — the safest, hypoallergenic option for fresh piercings. No surgical steel or plated gold in the initial install. After healing you can switch to 14–18k gold or certified gemstones.
Do you do septum, lip and tongue piercings?
Yes. We cover all ear piercings (lobe, helix, tragus, conch, daith, rook, industrial), facial (septum, nostril, medusa, labret, snake bites), oral (tongue, smiley), body (navel, surface, microdermal) and genital. Anatomy assessment during consultation ensures the right pick for you.
Booking & Consultations
How do I book a free consultation?
Message us via Instagram DM, WhatsApp or fill out the contact form picking your artist. We reply within 48 business hours. Consultations happen in-studio or online to define subject, size, placement and quote.
Do I need to leave a deposit?
Yes. Appointments are confirmed after an €80 deposit (deducted from the total). The deposit covers the artist’s design time and is non-refundable in case of no-show or cancellation within 48h of the appointment.
Can I reschedule or cancel?
You can reschedule for free up to 48 hours before the appointment by messaging the artist on DM or WhatsApp. Cancellations within 48h forfeit the deposit. For illness or documented emergencies we always find a fair solution.
Do you do walk-in days?
Yes, we run walk-in and flash days with pre-drawn designs at fixed prices. Dates are announced on /eventi/ and social. Walk-in day = pick a flash and get tattooed, first come first served, no booking.
What languages can I use?
All the crew speaks Italian and English. Some residents also speak Spanish or French. Travelling in? Send your references ahead via DM so we set up the consultation and you only need to come in once.
Aftercare
How do I care for a new tattoo the first days?
Keep the artist’s wrap on for the first 24 hours. Then remove it gently, wash with lukewarm water and neutral soap (no scrubbing), pat dry with a clean towel and apply a thin layer of the recommended cream 2–3 times a day for 10 days.
When can I wash a fresh tattoo?
As soon as the wrap comes off. Showers yes, baths no for the first 2–3 weeks. Avoid long direct water contact, scented soaps, sponges and hot hair-dryers. Always pat dry, never rub.
Can I swim with a fresh tattoo?
No — for at least 4 weeks. Sea, pool, sauna, hot tubs and tanning beds increase infection risk and fade the tattoo. Once healed, always use SPF 50 to keep colours vibrant over the years.
The tattoo itches or looks red — what do I do?
Mild itching and redness for the first 5–7 days is normal — that’s healing. Don’t scratch: pat with a clean cool cloth instead. If you notice heavy swelling, high heat, pus or fever, contact us immediately — don’t wait it out.
How do I clean a fresh piercing?
Twice a day with sterile saline solution (0.9%) on gauze: hold for 2–3 minutes to soften any crust, then rinse with fresh water. Don’t rotate the jewellery. No alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, tea tree oil or creams.
Studio
Where is Underskin Tattoo?
We’re at Via del Guasto 5/b, in Bologna’s historic centre, steps from Piazza Verdi and the university district — 10 minutes on foot from Piazza Maggiore. Map on the contact page.
What are the studio hours?
Open Monday to Saturday, 11:00 to 19:30. Closed Sundays. During events (walk-in days, openings) we open outside these hours — check /eventi/. Booking is still recommended for consultations and piercings.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept cash, debit and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), bank transfer and Satispay. Deposits are preferably via transfer or Satispay for instant tracking. Tax receipt always issued.
How do you handle hygiene and safety?
The studio holds the local health authority (ASL) licence. Needles and cartridges are single-use, sealed and opened in front of the client. Reusable tools go through a steam autoclave with weekly biological testing. Surfaces are disinfected between clients. All artists hold the OSS certificate required by Emilia-Romagna law.
Is there parking or public transport nearby?
The studio sits inside the ZTL (restricted traffic zone), so public transport or nearby car parks are recommended. Bus stops at Piazza Verdi and Ravegnana are a 3-minute walk. Riva Reno and Staveco car parks are 10 minutes away on foot.
